 Welcome To RIMS - FAQ's

What should I do if my map freezes?

Try pressing Control+F5 to reload the map.

How do I prevent pop-ups being blocked?

The Pop-Up blocker is a feature of XP which is turned on by default when the operating system is installed but very easily turned off! Open your web browser, click on 'tools' 'internet options', 'Privacy'. At the bottom there is a an option Pop-Up Blocker. Untick the box that says 'Block pop-ups'. Now you will be able to view the maps without any problems.

Why does the address I select not take me to the correct location?

Establishing the accuracy of the address database is an ongoing process.

Why can I not access addresses outside the Borough?

RIMS only provides mapping data for the Borough. Surrey County Council’s interactive mapping site provides interactive mapping for the whole of Surrey. Click Here

Why are some layers not visible even though I have chosen to display them?

The scale at which certain layers are displayed is pre-set to avoid an over-complicated display and to reduce processing time. Zoom in or out as necessary.

At what scale do landline/raster appear?

Colour Raster (1:50,000) is available between 1:15000 and 1:40000. Black & White Raster (1:10,000) is available between 1:7500 to 1:15000. Landline is viewable below 1:7500. Aerial photos are only available under 1:7500 (resolution is poor below approx. 1:800).

What is the significance of the square tick boxes and the radio buttons on the key?

The square boxes allow the layers to be ticked on or off to make the layers visible or not. The radio buttons indicate which layer is active. Certain tool functions require the layer to be activated. Only one layer can be active at any time.

Why do I have to go through the disclaimer page before accessing the maps?

Before accessing the interactive mapping, users should be aware of the legal issues pertaining to the use and sharing of data.

Can I use this mapping for the submission of planning applications?

Please do not use any maps that you obtain from this site for the purpose of submitting a planning application. The mapping is not provided for this purpose and the maps will not be to a recognised scale.

Can I save the image to insert into a word document?

Yes. Set up the map view and select the print icon from the tool bar below the map. When the print page is generated, right click on the map image and select the option ‘Save Picture As…..’. Change the file type from .png to .bmp (bitmap).

Why do different users have different extents on their screens?

This depends on the screen resolution of your pc. Please use the scroll-bars to ensure you have access to all functions and layers.

How do I obtain a grid reference and current scale for a particular site?

The grid reference and scale are located at the bottom left-hand corner of the screen in the status bar. Remember that the cursor must be in the map frame.

Why are some of the maps out of date?

Recent re-surveying by Ordnance Survey has resulted in misalignment of captured data in relation to their current base maps. A project to adjust our captured data to the new Ordnance Survey Master Map will start in the near future.

Happy Mapping!
