Runnymede Interactive Mapping Service

Welcome To RIMS - User Guide
RIMS offers an easy to use interactive GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping service that delivers and displays information geographically referenced to the Earth’s surface. Simply put, a GIS combines layers of information about a place to give you a better understanding of that place. Remember that if you are new to GIS and mapping you don’t have to learn everything to get immediate results, sometimes just looking at a map will tell you what you want to know. The 'Map Tools' are located within a toolbar below the map. You can use the tools to interact directly with the map, to navigate and to obtain extra information. Depending on which map tool you select your mouse will prompt the required task.

Adding & Activating Map Layers

You can use the 'Layers' table of contents on the right hand side of the browser to add or remove and activate information in the map.

To add a layer to the map, tick the box () that appears next to your chosen layer - the map view should automatically refresh. If this does not happen click the ‘Refresh Map’ Button. The symbol for that layer will be added to the map to indicate the location of your chosen features.
To remove a layer from the map, simply untick the box next to your chosen map layer and refresh the map view. This will remove the feature.

The activate layer option also appears in the table of contents on the right hand side of the browser. Activating a layer allows you to query, search and buffer features in that layer. To activate a layer in the map, simply click the ‘Activate’ tick box () that appears next to your chosen layer and click the ‘Refresh Map’ Button. You will now be able to select or buffer features from the active layer. Some layers may also be classified into relevant groups of data such as Transport Networks or Local Plan Layers. This allows you to display and activate multiple layers using just one tick box.
